Australian Sports Sport in Australian Society Australian people's lives are greatly affected by sport. In Australia, most people will either participate in sport or watch sport, wether it at the arena or on television, what ever you do it would be hard not be caught up in all the hype surrounding sport. A lot of people will participate on weekends at a social level, but some people will play representative sport, that is the reason that many Australians have come to think of themselves as a great sporting nation. It is these ideas that have allowed Australian athlete's to become world champions. People participate in sport not only for the physical values but the values of team sprit, sportsmanship, relaxation and for some financial rewards. Sport is - one or more people competing against another team or individual to see who will win. Sport also is - a game played at a non-competitive level. Some people however believe that competitive sport causes narrow-mindedness or that winning and competition lead to individualism and selfishness. Sport is open to people of any age or race. Anyone can participate in sport, however as you get older you may be limited physically to the amount or sport you play. Some other limitations may be the resources available, your age, your time available or the costs involved. A survey was said to be conducted by the courier mail titled, "Yes, We Really Are Sports Mad". The survey had the following results, 88% people in capital cities play sport with 1 in every 2 of those people taking part in at least four sports a week. Swimming was seen to be the favourite sport among participants with tennis, fishing, snooker and pool close behind. Also in this survey it was said 2 out of 3 Australians that live in capital cities will go to at least one sporting match a year. The reason a large number of Australian lives are affected by sport is because you hear about it every day, wether it be on the radio, in a newspaper or on television. The Courier-Mail devotes a section of the paper just to sport and so does the news services. On Foxtel and Galaxy there are two sports channels and on Optus Vision there are three. On the AM radio stations, there will be three or four minutes every half hour on sport. A large section of the media is devoted to the broadcast of sport - everybody had herd before they arrived home from school or work on Monday the 8th of September that Patrick Rafter had won the singles tittle at the American Open tennis championship, this is an example of how fast the media spreads news about Australian sporting stars. Anyone between the ages of 16 and 65 will watch some sport on television during the year. Cricket is the most watched sport on TV although tennis, Rugby League, Australian Rules Football, Motor Racing and Basketball also draw large crowds ('Yes, we really are sports mad'. The Courier-Mail). Results were poled in 1987, stating that watching television was an Australians' favourite pastime. Informal sport was 9th on the results poled and organised sport was 11th (See Table 1, Appendix). During an inquiry in 1992, it found that substantial numbers of teenage girls were quitting sport (Williams, Peter, Health and Physical Education, 1995). In Victoria, during the 70's the government recognised the inclination in "spectatoritis" - people were spending more time watching sport on TV than participating themselves (Williams, 1995: 103). In 1975, a large proportion of the people of Victoria were asked the question - do you feel your physical fitness to be important? With the majority believing their physical fitness to be important, but not willing to do anything about it. At the Atlanta Olympics, Australians were recognised not only individually but also as a country that they were a force in sport not to reckoned with. This was demonstrated in the 1500m men's freestyle, when Kieren Perkins, who no one thought would win came back from what seemed were unsurmountable odds and won. Perkins received a second reward for his 1500m performance with the honour of being named Australian sportsman of the year. Kathy Watt was also rewarded with the honour of sportswoman of the year, for her efforts in the Olympics, namely cycling. If Australia sends performers like this to the following Olympic's in Sydney and Athens, Australia should continue winning medals. Without a doubt I think that it is clear to say that sport plays a major role in the Australian society.

Prepping Your Kid for a Test With No Study Guide Its the moment you dread: Your child comes home from school on a Tuesday and tells you that there are a test three days from now over chapter seven. But, since she lost the review guide (for the third time this year), the teacher is making her figure out the content to study without it. You dont want to send her off to her room to study blindly from the textbook; Shell fail! But, you also dont want to do all the work for her. Theres a method that will get your child prepped for that chapter test despite the little misplacement habit shes grown fond of, and even better, she may learn more than she did had she actually used the review guide. Ensure She Learns The Chapter Content Before you study with your kid for the test, youll need to know that shes learned the content of the chapter. Sometimes, kids do not pay attention during class because they know the teacher will be passing out a review guide before the test. Teachers, however, want your kid to actually learn something; they typically put the bare bones of the test content on the review sheets offering a glimpse of the facts shell need to know. Not every test question will be on there! So, youll need to make sure your child has actually grasped the ins and outs of the chapter if she wants to ace the test. An effective way to do it is with a reading and study strategy like SQ3R. The SQ3R Strategy Chances are good that youve heard of the SQ3R Strategy. The method was introduced by Francis Pleasant Robinson in his 1961 book, Effective Study, and remains popular because it enhances reading comprehension and study skills. Kids in third or fourth grade through adults in college can use the strategy solo to grasp and retain complex material from a textbook. Kids younger than that can use the strategy with an adult guiding them through the process. SQ3R utilizes pre-, during and post-reading strategies, and since it builds metacognition, your childs ability to monitor her own learning, its a highly effective tool for every subject in every grade shell encounter. If you happen to be unfamiliar with the method, SQ3R is an acronym that stands for these five active steps your child will take while reading a chapter: Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review. Survey Your child will browse through the chapter, reading titles, bold-faced words, introduction paragraphs, vocabulary words, subheadings, pictures, and graphics to grasp, in general, the content of the chapter. Question Your child will turn each one of the chapter subheadings into a question on a sheet of paper. When she reads, The Arctic Tundra, shell write, What is the Arctic Tundra?, leaving space underneath for an answer. Read Your child will read the chapter to answer the questions shes just created. She should write her answers in her own words in the space provided. Recite Your child will cover her answers and attempt to answer the questions without referring to the text or her notes. Review Your child will reread portions of the chapter about which she isnt clear. Here, she can also read the questions at the end of the chapter in order to test her knowledge of the content. In order for the SQ3R method to be effective, youll need to teach it to your child. So the first time the review guide goes missing, sit down and go through the process, surveying the chapter with her, helping her form questions, etc. Model it before she dives in so she knows what to do. Ensure She Retains The Chapter Content So, after applying the reading strategy, youre fairly confident that she understands what shes read, and can answer the questions youve created together. She has a solid knowledge base, but there are still three days before the test! Wont she forget whats shes learned? Its a great idea to have her learn the answers to the questions prior to the test, but in reality, drilling will force those specific questions, but nothing else, into your kids head. Besides, what if the teacher asks different questions than the ones youve learned together? Your child will learn more in the long run by getting a learning combo meal with knowledge as the main course and some higher-order thinking as a tasty side. Venn Diagrams Venn diagrams are perfect tools for kids in that they allow your child to process information and analyze it quickly and easily. If youre not aware of the term, a Venn diagram is a figure made of two interlocking circles. Comparisons are made in the space where the circles overlap; contrasts are defined in the space where the circles do not. A couple of days prior to the exam, hand your child a Venn Diagram and write one of the topics from the chapter on top of the left circle, and a correlative topic from your childs life on the other. For instance, if the chapter test is about biomes, write Tundra above one of the circles and the biome in which you live above the other. Or, if shes learning about Life on Plymouth Plantation, she could compare and contrast that with Life in the Smith Household. With this diagram, shes attaching new ideas to parts of her life with which shes already familiar, which helps her build meaning. A cold page filled with facts doesnt seem real, but when compared to something she knows, the new data suddenly crystallizes into something tangible. So, when she steps outside into the brilliant sunshine of a warm day, she may consider how cold a person might feel in the Arctic Tundra. Buddhism   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  For over 2000 years Buddhism has existed as an organized religion. By religion we mean that it has a concept of the profane, the sacred, and approaches to the sacred. It has been established in India, China, Japan and other eastern cultures for almost 2000 years and has gained a strong foothold in North America and Europe in the past few centuries. However, one might ask; what fate would Buddhism face had Siddartha Guatama been born in modern times; or more specifically in modern day North America? Would his new found enlightenment be accepted now as it was thousands of years ago? Would it be shunned by society as another â€Å"cult† movement? What conflicts or similarities would it find with modern science; physics in particular? The answers to these questions are the aim of this paper, as well as a deeper understanding of modern Buddhism.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Although I will stick with traditional ideas raised by Buddhism, one detail in the story of Siddartha Guatama must be addressed in order for it to be relevant to the main question being asked: What obstacles would Siddartha Guatama face had he been born in modern day North America. Primarily, it must be recognized that rather than being born into the Hindu religion (which in itself is mystical), Siddartha would have most likely been born into a Christian family. This in itself presents the first obstacle, that being that Christianity is a strictly monotheistic and non-mystical faith. Hence from the outset, although in the traditional story Siddartha faced a conflict with his father (Ludwig 137), in the North American scenario the conflict would have been heightened by the fact that his search for enlightenment was not even closely similar to the Christian faith.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  As with science, changes in religious thought are often met with strong opposition. It is interesting to note though, that many parallels can be found between modern physics and Eastern Mysticism. On the one hand, Steven Lawson provides a point of view based on the governments action, and on the other, Charles Payne gives the story from the Civil Rights activists’ side of the story. I believe the federal government played an important role and set the pace in the civil rights movement through the leadership of five dedicated presidents, through important legislation passed by Congress, and through key Supreme Court rulings. The presidents starting from Roosevelt, and ending with Johnson, all took important steps in shaping the civil rights movement. Many of their actions also set the pace for the movement. Roosevelt was the first to take a step forward towards racial equality. As World War II came to an end, it was very difficult for President Franklin D. Roosevelt to ignore the increasing demands for equal rights form African Americans. Roosevelt took the first step towards changes in legislation favoring the civil rights movement. In 1941, he issued an executive order to create the Fair Employment Practice Committee (FEPC). The creation of the FEPC showed how the federal government used its power to monitor racial bias, and it also set a precedent for future action regarding civil rights, which was to act only to avoid a specific crisis and to keep change to a minimum. As violence broke out throughout the south trying to register Black voters, African American leaders and their white allies approached President Truman. They wanted Truman to investigate the violence caused by opposing white southern democrats and reinforced through massive acts of violence from white supremacists groups. Because of the violence, Truman created the Presidents Committee on Civil Rights. This was an important decision because the committee would release a report called To Secure These Rights that would outline future steps taken in the civil rights movement. The report argued that segregation was morally wrong as well as economically damaging. It stated that â€Å"(d)iscrimination imposes a direct cost upon our economy through the wasteful duplication of many facilities and services required by the ‘separate but equal’ policy† (48). This report allowed the federal government to increase its power in fighting discrimination and segregation. An other important step Truman took during his presidency was to order the desegregation of the military. Though he had a hard time passing any kind of legislation through Congress, he offered his Justice Department to help the NAACP in several Supreme Court cases as amicus curiae. Eisenhower, like his predecessors, believed in gradualism as the best method to lessen racial bias. His failure to take decisive action, allowed southern states to evade compliance with the Supreme Court Ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. For Eisenhower, the most important and least objectionable step was to gain voting rights for Blacks in the south. However, Eisenhower was forced to take action when the Governor of Arkansas would not allow the Little Rock Nine to enter Central High School. He dispatched the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock to protect the nine Black students as they integrated into an all white school. The president â€Å"revealed the enormous might of the federal government while also exposing the reluctance of presidents to deploy it† (17). When Eisenhower addressed the nation on September 24, 1957, he explained his actions to the nation stating that he had no choice but to send armed forces because his †Proclamation of yesterday was n ot observed, and the obstruction of justice still continues† (61). Kennedy offered much hope to civil rights activists during his presidential campaign. However, he could do little to support activists without losing his support from southern white democrats. Kennedy was unable to pass through any kind of legislation because southern democrats often used the threat of a filibuster to prevent a majority form approving civil rights bills. Instead, Kennedy continued in Truman’s footsteps by using the Justice Department to file suits and challenge discrimination, mainly in voter registration procedures. Kennedy’s civil right attorneys won an impressive number of cases under the direction of the Attorney General Robert Kennedy. For the most part, Kennedy stayed on the sidelines of the civil rights movement. The only time he would take action was as â€Å"a response to breakdowns in law and order† (20). Perhaps Kennedy’s most important contribution came shortly before his death on June 11, 1963. Kennedy addressed the co untry stating that civil rights were a moral issue for the whole nation. He stated that â€Å"the time has come for this Nation to fulfill its promise. The events . . . have so increased the cries for equality that no . . . body can prudently choose to ignore them† (79). Shortly after, he introduced a civil rights bill in Congress. After Kennedy’s death, President Johnson took over the white house. Johnson displayed a passion for the civil rights movement that exceeded Kennedy’s. Using Kennedy’s death to his advantage, Johnson pushed the civil rights bill through Congress warning that he would accept no delays and no compromises. As a result, the most far reaching civil rights statute since Reconstruction was passed on July 2, 1964, the Civil Rights Act. Johnson also used force like the FBI to bring down groups like the KKK, and to protect marchers and demonstrators throughout the country. By the end of the 1960’s these five presidents along with key legislation and Supreme Court rulings brought the worst of civil rights movement to an end. African Americans had succeeded in desegregating the south and exercising their right to vote with the support of the federal government. It took almost two decades for African Americans to achieve their goals, partially due to the lack of action on the part of the federal government.
